2009 WPT Merit Classic Champion Crowned
A slew of big names sat on the precipe of another championship to add to the legendary resumes. Huck Seed, a World Series of Poker Main Event Champion, by virture of that is probably the biggest name left. Doesn’t matter that he didn’t get any TV time in winning it, he did win the bigggest tournament in Poker.
That didn’t help him get to the final table of the WPT Classic. Seed bowed out in 7th place. The quiet prop bet legend got his money in good with a slim lead as his AJ got called by Thomas Bichon’s KQ. The lead flip early as Binchon got a pair but a 10 gave Seed a straight draw to go with his three Ace outs. None came. Though as consolation by missing the final table Seed still had an extra day to play in scenic Cyprus. For many of the players the tournament was like a mini-Magic Moments of Poker tour.
For the television producers that last exit was just like the previous three. Jonathan Little went out in 8th place. His good luck with AQ came to an end as his opponent held it and took him out. His K9 got some help with a Q10 flop. His gutshot never materialized nor did a King come and Little, a past WPT champion, was taken out by the soon to be new champion: Thomas Bichon.
Nenad Medic, another past WPT champion, flamed out in 9th place. For him that meant a little bigger payday then he expected going in. He was the short stack and only the final collapse of Layne Flack kept Medic from getting the least amount of cash of the final ten. Medic’s A7 had little chance verse his opponent’s AK. When a King hit the board is was all but over for Medic.
Flack’s final nail hit when he shoved all in for the first, and last, time in the tournament. Flack’s QJ ran into pocket Queens. From the get go, TV producers should have had a bad feeling their dream final table might not happen… and it didn’t. In reality, the bad luck started the day before when November Niner, Kelly Kim, went out 11th.
Unfortunately, the names at the final table were not exactly household names. Thomas Bichon took it down and won almost 580k. The rest of the payouts and the finishers were as follows:
