  • Profiling Up and Comers… Darryl Fish

Standing just outside of the final table at the Gulf Coast Poker Championship stood Darryl Fish tossing barbs at his friend Tyler Smith as Smith fought his way to heads-up with Chad Brown.  It came from good place, and helped to keep Smith focused.  If he sucked out Fish heckled him, if he fumbled his chips Fish pointed it out, and if he got out of line Fish nudge him back into shape.

Not many players have accomplished as much as Tyler Smith at such a young age (see previous profile) but one player who can definitely call himself a peer is Darryl Fish.  Fish went from railbirding Smith to having a slew of his own railbirds as he took down one of the more pretigious online poker tournaments.  The first place in the WCOOP for over 200k this year came within days of cheering Smith to second.  So if anybody standing there had room to criticize Smith it was Fish.  Indeed if there was anybody in the room that could discuss poker strategy on Smith’s level it was Fish.

Fish, who goes by Fish, and here is the obligatory reference, is anything but a fish.  No, he’s a deadly online player and an already highly decorated live player.  At the tender age of 23 he’s already amassed more than 200k in live tournament cashes.  His coming out party as a live player was this years World Series of Poker.  Though, he lacked the signature score, or a bracelet every pro plays for, he announced himself to the world by cashing in seven, (SEVEN!) events.

He kept knocking on the door and his final cash was his biggest and most impressive.  He went all the way to 9th place in the Pot Limit Hold’em World Championship and pocketed 77k.  this followed a slew of finishes on the periphy of big money in huge fields.  His other cashes put him above the 100k mark for the Series and though 72nd, 369th, 25th, 41st, 99th, and 113th don’t seem that impressive considering they were cashes gives you an idea of how big the fields he was able to navigate.

Fish’s lone first place cash came in June of last year at the Binions Poker Classic.   This time it was in Pot Limit Omaha, which gives you an idea of the range of his games.  All told he has cashed in 16 live events in the two years he’s been legal to play.
