Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Daniel “jungleman12″ Cates grinded out another 2,120 hands of their Challenge. The first challenge with Patrik Antonius has gone on a bit of a hiatus but in a recent interview Dwan claimed both challenges would resume when time was available. Except after that interview nothing really happened.
The rules of the challenge stipulate that the competitors must play at least four games of Texas Hold em poker or Pot Limit Omaha at once. The issue will be settled after 50k worth of heads up hands.
Durrrr offered three to one odds, which many suggested was way too much, but after dusting off Antonius (though the competition remains incomplete) Durrrr struggled to find challengers. Cates picked up the mantle and decided to Duel with Durrrr (isn’t that alliterative name far better than the Durrrr Challenge–just a marketing note).
Cates ran out to a sizable lead in the challenge and in the latest session. In fact after just under 500 hands Cates had built up a 212k lead. Durrrr rallied and built up his own 91k lead that was chopped to just the 13k he finished up on the evening. With almost 10k of the challenge played, Cates still sits on his commanding 646k lead.
In this challenge the players agreed before hand to include running it twice and that’s just what they did when they ran Aces into Kings. Durrrr was sitting on the bigger hand with over 50k behind. Cates had three times that and watched his chiplead on that table turn into a small deficit.
Dwan raised to 1200 on the button, Cates reraised to 4400. Dwan called. A flop of 7410 bounced and Cates led out for 4800. Dwan still slowly playing his rockets simply called. A Jack fell on the turn. Cates bet 13.4k and Dwan moved all in for his remaining 43k. Cates called.
Dwan showed the bad news of his Aces over Cates Kings. They ran it twice but no King came either time to save Cates. This was the second of a few hands that Dwan played slowly. Another big pot happened when Dwan let Cates lead the way. Preflop Cates raised, Dwan greased him back, and Cates fourbet. Dwan called and checked a flop of 366.
Again, Cates was holding pocket kings and again they were a major underdog. Obviously, they didn’t start that way when the hand began as Dwan had lowly 36. Course with that flop the hand improved and improved quickly. Cates bet the flop, and Dwan called the 4800.
Durrrrr checked the turn which was a 9 and Cates bet again for him. Dwan called the 14400 to see the river and watched as another three hit the board. Cates moved all in after Dwan checked, putting in almost 40k when Dwan had the virtual nuts. Dwan of course called. Not a good night for Kings for jungleman12.
As Cates mounted his own late in the session comeback he would win a couple of big hands. One notable one was when Dwan had a stack of over 220k. Cates had just 45k on that table. Cates looked at pocket 10s and raised. Dwan predictably three bet him. Cates four-bet it and Dwan just called. The flop was almost bingo for Dwan as both his Jack and Nine hit.
Only problem was a third ten was sandwiched in between them. Dwan checked to Cates who fired in a small feeler bet. What he felt next was strength as Dwan moved him all in if he called. Of course he called and saw his set was crushing Dwan’s two pair.
Again, the youngsters ran it twice but this time it was Dwan who bricked out back to back and jungleman12 winning a almost 100k pot.
