Finding Your Game

Here is another question:

Why raise before the flop with these cards? Well, let us just consider that are in a no-limit game and you have been dealt the ‘bullets’ (A-A). This is the finest hand in poker and right now you know you are winning the hand (but if someone else also has A-A, then in that case case it is a draw).

You are also aware that there are five other cards to come that could potentially make any other hand on the table powerful enough to thrash(beat) you. Of course , A-A is very strong, but it is still only a pair.

Being acquainted with the law of averages then, you would be smart to limit the number of other hands up against yours when the flop arrives – reducing the possibility of a player with a weaker hand drawing cards to beat your A’s. Your hand could bounce back too, but it is far less likely as you are well aware of the fact that there are only two further A’s out there.

A pre-flop raise will compel the players with weaker hands to fold prior to the flop expectantly leaving you at the forefront and against a completely dominated hand. One of the callers is usually regarded as ideal when playing premium pairs. Every other caller hugely increases the chances of being beaten.

Position stuff- Wot is it?

Your location or position on the table in relation to the dealer decides which order you’ll be playing in. The earlier your position, the weaker your cards. Position is an essential factor in this game. The first position in hold ‘em sits directly to the right of the big blind – the player seated here is ‘under the gun’ and, as the name implies, it’s not a comfortable place to be.

The main problem and drawback with early position is the lack of information. Lack of information because you have to act before everyone else which is quite not easy n comfy. so everyone else on the table would be aware of what you are going to do before you know what they are going to do.

The most comfortable position and also the best place to be on a poker table is ‘on the button’, with the dealer button right in front of you and the all the big and small blinds to your left. You need not be the one to begin or act first in fact you are the last to act and can make decisions on your hand based on what you see other players doing.

A lot of novice players make the mistake of ignoring position thinking that position does not matter, but actually it is a big deal. Always remember, poker is all about gathering information and the smallest oddments can make the difference between winning and losing.
