Tackling Different Poker Players -I
No doubt you play poker with cards but actually you should know how to play with the people. It is a great game to be played with other people’s emotions, weaknesses and strengths using all your own skills and abilities and the most important of them all, presence of mind. You should learn to take advantage of a weak point of a slow player or a loose aggressive player and also have the guts to knock out a tight aggressive player by making bold moves.
If you learn to play people then your chance of winning increase tenfold unlike when you are only playing with cards. Of course the fundamental principles of poker are also equally important. You will be able to understand and realise many opportunities and bluffing and the more you play it will become easier for you to steal the game and know about others who are also trying to bluff you, who is a bluffer or a thief on the table amongst you.
While playing poker pay attention to the competition, observe the types and styles of players. Once you understand the style of a player, a loose passive or tight aggressive, it will become easy for you to decide your actions and steps. It is advisable to and no doubt a very useful idea to silently observe the actions of players even if you are not playing. You might end up learning something learning.
The best target for a bluff is a too tight player because they make big bets to confuse you or to make you doubtful that they are bluffing. They are happy to fold in the face of heavy betting when there are premium cards, flush draws and straight draws on the boards. They consistently fold in the face of pressurizing bets, set out their stall very tight even though they hardly involve much. It is not an easy task to let down a too tight players with bluffs but you can knock him off hand. Psychologically, pay full attention to the situation. Continue pressurizing bets and be prepared to back off if he/she does not look like cracking. Where as loose passive players keep on calling bets, they do not put down their hands easily, they do not want to miss a little chance of winning, bluffing at such loose passive slow players lowers your game to their slow level. It is really a headache to play with them.
Thus it is better to target loose passive player with a good hand selection rather than bluffing them. They are happy to double your bluff with one of their own and let the cards fall where they may. For a super aggressive player, loose aggressive players are best targets. The super aggressive player knows ow to bluff others but they can easily recognize others’ bluff so it is better not to try and bluff a bluff master.
