Should I Avoid Playing at Micro Limit Tables?
Hi,
I left a message weeks ago but I received no reply from you. I assume you were too busy. Now, I hope you can find some time to answer this.
Well, I’ve tried everything from loose passive to tight aggressive. I’ve also tried a couple of strategies, particularly on how to properly play poker. But yet there seems no clarity.
Just days ago, I formulated a theory. It was founded on the idea that micro limit tables can’t be beaten. I know game changes depending on who is at the table, so I should have concluded this way. But of course I know most players at these tables buy-in for the minimum, and they stay for 30-50 hands, bust out or cash out, and then later on will be nowhere to be found.
Similarly, the people you play against at these tables are not disciplined enough to have any consistency so you should expected that typically they will make good plays at first, then turn around but later on will just have something stupid. For this, I don’t give people the chance to read me by playing any two cards from time to time.
In general, everything seems like a pack mentality. Everyone continues to call because of the implied odds and continues to find ways or means to win. As a result, it’s then so easy to be trapped into calling a big river bet as the pot gets big and the odds say I should call. However, there’s greater risk to get bad hands out because of raising more preflop. Honestly, I feel my belief works, however in micro limit in it’s quite a different story.
So, what’s the point now? Well, it’s just a simple thing – no strategy can be effective in micro limit tables. I’m not sure if it makes sense but what you need when in micro limit tables is to pray that the draws don’t hit for you to win. Bear in mind that they might more or less call you down. And what’s worse is that they might call you down with a made hand.
Also, the play at these tables is so tight and passive that only a few can overcome. And typically, in these tables, good cards will either grant you a small pot or otherwise keep you away from big pots.
Generally speaking, whenever you play micro limit, it’s like as if you’re playing against a pack, not against individual people who give importance to their money. Be careful as there will always be a threat for you. Be strong as when you play against a pack, with a wrong move, you can be beaten easily.
Right now, I’m thinking if it would be best for me if I just avoid micro limit tables for some time. Do you think it’s the right thing to do? I don’t want to lose everything I earned. Please, I need to hear your advice on this.
Thank you.
Mike
Mike,
This is a common complaint by players that play micro limit tables. The main reason is that with micro limits, many people will either take a lottery approach or just use the game as entertainment. They don’t consider it real poker due to the limits. The strategy with the least variance is a tight-aggressive strategy. It does indeed work, but there will be swings.
Some higher limits may play more reasonable for your liking, but you may want to look and make sure that there aren’t any additional leaks to your game that may cause you to lose money. Some of these include playing too many hands, staying in hands on bad draws, etc.
